A US chicken processor employing over 3,000 people is a facing a record fine of over $1m for repeated health and safety violations.

The $1,034m penalty leveled at Allen Family Foods is the largest ever to be issued by the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health unit (MOSH).

Repeat offender

Having already been fined for a number of serious violations, the health and safety authorities decided to impose a record fine on the chicken processor.

“This particular employer had been a source of repeated health and safety violations over a number of years,” said Alexander Sanchez, Maryland secretary of labor, licensing and regulation. “We must hold repeat offenders accountable for failing to do all they can to ensure worker safety.”

The latest penalty comes after an employee suffered a serious injury reaching into an unguarded conveyor belt in December last year. This incident led to an inspection that uncovered 51 violations of occupational safety and health laws, including one egregious violation and 15 willful violations.

In total MOSH has inspected Allen Family Foods 16 times since 1998 and uncovered192 violations.

Federal fine

The chicken processor has also been pulled up for serious violations at a Delaware plant by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The federal agency fined Allen Family Foods $182,200 in March this year for 45 serious violations related to hazards with industrial trucks, falls, personal protective equipment, machine guarding, electrical hazards, process safety management, respirators and emergency response.

Allen Family Foods employs over 3,000 people and processes 2.5m birds a week at several locations in Delaware, Maryland and North Carolina.
