ConAgra Foods has voluntarily recalled all varieties of Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter after fears that these products may be linked to salmonella.

The company said that the affected products begin with product code 2111 imprinted on the lid of both brands.

"ConAgra Foods is working with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a statistical report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that these products may be linked to the foodborne illness salmonella," said the company in a statement.

The firm went on to say that while none of its product tests have indicated the presence of salmonella, it is taking this precautionary measure "because consumer health and safety is our top priority".

"We are working closely with the FDA to better understand its concerns, and we will take whatever additional measures are needed to ensure the safety, quality and wholesomeness of our products," said Chris Kircher, spokesperson for ConAgra Foods.

ConAgra's impressive reaction to the possible contamination reflects growing consumer concern. According to the NPD Group's Food Safety Monitor, the latest awareness and concern data for salmonella (as of 1/17/07 - 1/24/07) are as follows:

Aware and Concerned – 78 percent

The average salmonella awareness and concern levels for 2005 are:

The market research company said that in light of the recent outbreak, it would be closely monitoring any changes in consumer awareness and concern about salmonella.

ConAgra said that consumers who find they have purchased this product should discard it, but save the product lid. For a full refund, consumers must return the Peter Pan Peanut Butter or Great Value Peanut Butter product lid along with their name and mailing address to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103.
