FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a statement: “During the outbreak, I said that FDA would not agree to the sale of eggs to consumers from Wright County Egg until we had confidence that they could be shipped and consumed safely. After four months of intensive work by the company and oversight, testing, and inspections by FDA, I am satisfied that time has come.”
Iowa-based Wright County Egg was one of two companies behind a recall of more than half a billion eggs in August. About 380m eggs were recalled by Wright County Egg, after the operation was linked to a nationwide outbreak of salmonella enteriditis. The recall expanded to Hillandale Farms – another Iowa facility – a week later, which pulled a further 170m eggs from the market. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1,470 reported illnesses were likely to have been associated with the outbreak.
