SunSprouts has issued a voluntary recall of its alfalfa, onion and gourmet sprouts because of possible salmonella contamination.

It initiated the recall based on communication with Nebraska state officials investigating several cases of salmonella in Nebraska and Iowa, where the sprouts have been distributed.

Although there is no laboratory evidence that the strain is linked to the sprouts, SunSprouts’ parent company CW Sprouts has said it has decided to recall the products as a precautionary measure.

Nebraska state officials, who are working with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine the source of the outbreak, said: “CW Sprouts has been very cooperative and is acting with an abundance of caution to voluntarily recall their sprouts.”

They said that so far there are approximately 14 laboratory-confirmed cases linked to the salmonella strain.
