The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has granted seven organizations a total of $2m to help in the efforts to combat childhood obesity.

The grants were awarded through RWJF’s nationwide Leadership for Healthy Communities scheme, which supports initiatives to increase children's access to affordable healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity.

Director of Leadership for Healthy Communities Maya Rockeymoore Cummings said: "Because of their influence in shaping the environments in which children live, learn and play, elected and appointed officials are critical partners in efforts to prevent childhood obesity. These seven organizations have an impressive record of working with policy-makers to successfully implement strategies that support the health of children and their families."

The organizations to receive grants of about $300,000 each are: the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials; National Association of County and City Health Officials; National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund; National Association of State Boards of Education; National Conference of State Legislatures; National Congress of American Indians; and National League of Cities Institute.
