Ocean’s Flavor Natural Sea Salts has urged the Food and Drug Administration to be clear about the distinction between salt and sodium, as it considers how to react to a recent report from the Institute of Medicine.

The company argues that regulation to reduce salt in foods would not go far enough, saying that it is sodium that has been linked to hypertension, not salt. Salt is about 40 percent sodium.

CEO of Ocean's Flavor Natural Sea Salts Al Kirchner said: “Our top food producers understand this distinction between salt and sodium – that they are not the same thing – and they are leading the change to reduce harmful sodium in their quality food products."
