The Norwegian company is involved in two of the three projects selected to receive funding under the EU’s seventh framework programme for research and development.
One of the projects, EuroBioRef, is coordinated from Lille University in France and has 28 partners all developing methods for making chemicals from biomass.
“Our role in EuroBioRef is to develop technology which degrades the biomass to sugars in solution,” said technology director Gudbrand Rødsrud.
The other project is called Suprabio. With 16 partners, it involves complete biorefinery processes from biomass to a range of products. Here Borregaard is contributing with microfibrillar cellulose.
