A small quantity of hot dogs produced at the company’s Hamilton plant that were quarantined under routine Listeria testing procedures was inadvertently shipped to distribution centres and customers in Eastern Canada, said the processor.
The Canadian manufacturer said that there has been no illness reported as a result of consumption of these products and the risk to human health is extremely low.
"In this particular case we had human error," said Michael McCain, CEO of Maple Leaf Foods.
"Product was released out of quarantine. It shouldn't have been. We've taken corrective action against both the individuals responsible and the situation," he added.
Maple Leaf says it tests for all six listeria species, not just Listeria monocytogenes.
