The company at the center of the US salmonella outbreak linked to peanut products has said that its Blakely, Georgia facility was inspected regularly by federal and state officials in 2008.

The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) released the statement on Wednesday to clear up what it called “confusing and misleading information in the media”.

“We want the public to know that there were regular visits and inspections of the Blakely facility by federal and state regulators in 2008,” it said.

The US Food and Drug Administration has launched a criminal investigation of the PCA, accusing it of knowingly distributing potentially contaminated peanut products.

More than 550 people have been sickened by the outbreak, and the FDA has said that the strain may have caused eight deaths.
