Europe’s food and beverage industry group has welcomed EFSA’s suggestion that the daily reference value for carbohydrates be raised from 230g to 260g.

EFSA was asked for its opinion of the nutrient intake amounts included in the proposal for the new EU regulation on nutrition labelling. As part of its opinion it suggested that the carbohydrate level be revised upwards.

The CIAA pointed out that 260g is “in fact closer to that proposed by industry than the 230g suggested in the Commission proposal”.

As for EFSA’s view of other nutrients – energy, total fat, saturated fat, total sugars, and salt – it found favourably for the Commission’s proposal. The levels in line with values in the CIAA’s own guidance daily amounts (GDA) labelling scheme.
