The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked for comments on Ajinomoto’s request for approval of a new sweetener that it hopes to market under the brand name Advantame.

The FDA notice said: “The potential environmental impact of this petition is being reviewed.” It added that in order to encourage public participation, it would display the notice at the Division of Dockets Management for public review and comment.

Ajinomoto submitted a dossier to the FDA for approval of Advantame in April. A spokesperson for the company told FoodNavigator-USA.com: “This is going on as they [Ajinomoto] would expect.”

The company claims a leading position in the global market for aspartame, which Leatherhead Food International valued at $637m last year.
