On January 4, President Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act into law, overcoming a number of obstacles, including remaining stalled in the Senate for a year, a filibuster attempt, a technical glitch and fierce debate over certain amendments. Funding was still a subject of debate at the time of signing, and by the end of the year, the FDA had secured an additional $50m in funding, $39m of which was earmarked to fund the new law. Implementing the law is expected to cost $1.4bn over five years. |
