Kemira ChemSolutions increases propionate prices

Kemira ChemSolutions has increased prices for its propionates by $150 a ton throughout the Americas, citing rising raw material and energy costs.

The company said prices would also rise by €100 a ton in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.

A major supplier of propionic acid based ingredients, Kemira ChemSolutions said the price rise was effective immediately, including for its Kemira Probake and Kemira Mold Control products, both liquids and solids.

Propionic acid is used in food preservatives, including sodium propionate, which is used as an antimicrobial in a wide range of foods, including baked goods, beverages, confectionery, puddings, jams and fillings and meat products.

It is used partly directly in foods and partly in mixtures, as sodium, calcium and potassium salts.

Calcium propionate, which has anti-mold and some antibacterial activity, is used in bakery products like breads and pizza bases, as well as cold pack cheese and pie fillings.
