The Illinois Department of Agriculture has launched an initiative to support the local economy, by urging consumers to pledge to buy locally produced groceries.
The ‘Illinois Product Challenge’ suggests that consumers set aside $10 of their weekly shopping budget to buy Illinois products. If every household in the state added $10 a week to the amount they spend on local products, it would raise an extra $47m a week for the local economy, or more than $2.4bn a year.
