Rugged pH sensor built for tough use, manufacturer claims

By Ahmed ElAmin, 13-Sep-2006

A new sensor on the market is designed to quickly measure pH in food samples, providing plants with a means of testing the quality of their products.

Pacific Sensor Technologies says its waterproof pH Spear can be used for the direct measurement of solid or semi-solid samples such as cheese, meats, fruits and bread. pH is one of the key parameters measured in food processing.

Unlike conventional pH electrodes, the Spear uses a glass tip electrode, enclosed in a resilient engineered plastic body. This allows it to withstand the force required to pierce solid or semi-solid food samples in direct measurement.

The open pore spear tip electrode is replaceable, allowing the tester to be reused. The open pore junction minimises clogging and delivers fast, stable measurements, the company stated.

Double junction sensor prolongs the useful life of electrode with no cross contamination of samples, the company said. The sensor can be cleaned with a mild detergent.

It has a 27mm (H) x 21 mm (W) LCD display, making it easier to read even if tester is held at a distance. It can be operated with one hand using a wireless electrode. A waterproof housing protects the sensor against high humidity or condensation.
