The bill, that passed by 35 votes to one on Tuesday, would set minimum safety standards and increase inspections of growing and packing facilities. It now heads to the House where a similar bill has been introduced.
Florida produces around three-quarters of the country's tomatoes, but the industry was hit by a false salmonella scare in 2008. The investigation eventually led to the discovery of salmonella in Mexican peppers, but by that stage the tomato industry had lost an estimated $100m.
