A letter was released on Wednesday evening in which McCain and Sen. Byron Dorgan from North Dakota announced an agreement with longtime pro-dietary supplements campaigner, Republican Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, over four areas of common ground, according to reports.
In addition to pushing the FDA to publish NDI guidelines quickly, the senators are calling for all dietary supplement companies to register with the federal government, as well as empowering FDA to issue a “mandatory recall order” if required. FDA would also be required to notify the DEA if steroids are detected in ingredients.
The Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010 [s3002] was introduced to widespread industry criticism last month by McCain and Byron Dorgan, a Democratic Senator from North Dakota.
