The prevalence of both diabetes and obesity has grown significantly in California, according to new research from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research.

The prevalence of diabetes rose by nearly 26 percent between 2001 and 2007, according to the study.

The study claims that California is falling short of targets for obesity and diabetes set by Healthy People 2010 - a national health-promotion and disease-prevention plan.

Obesity among Californian adolescents is over twice the national target of five percent, while the rate of diabetes among Californian adults is more than three times the federal goal of 2.5 percent of the population.

"When so many people of different ages, income and educational levels, and cultural backgrounds are struggling with obesity and diabetes, it suggests that 'going on a diet' is not enough," said research co-author Dr. Allison Diamant, from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research.
