Probably not, according to the results of our FoodNavigator-USA poll. But most of you at least believe it's a huge step in the right direction.

My Plate complication
While I think the "My Plate" campaign has made some useful improvements to the Pryamid concept and has been a useful teaching tool for the clients at my retirement facility, one of my non-nutrition colleagues thinks the concept is still too complicated. He is from South America and wants practical guidelines for a nutritious diet. He feels a few bullet points would be better. He thinks the website is too interactive and gets lost in trying to navigate through the program. I don't know how many lay people had input into developing the concept, but it would be interesting to conduct a poll to determine how John Q. Public has responded to the logic of My Plate. (If poll has not already been conducted.)

My Plate
Glad to see that the new "My Plate" is associating daily food intake to a "daily plate" just like the Caribbean Plate using the Caribbean Six Food Groups, a slightly different grouping system compared with the USA and the UK. All these plates are attractive and are good teaching tools.

Good Start
It's a good start to address the issue of portion control that plagues this country- leading to our obesity epidemic. I look forward to the release of more information and tools to use with my clients as the program moves ahead-especially around the fats/oils category that are unaccounted for by the new graphic.

A new concept, really???
The plate idea seems alot like the old basic 4 plan from 30 years ago, just in a different shape. It also is not really a novel idea as registered dietitians have been using this concept for several years and the cancer society also uses the plate concept. I don't like that it does not talk about what you need to eat for the day - that's whats important. Healthy fats need to be added to the plate and I am not sure how American breakfast choices will fit on this plate. I hate to think of all the money that has gone into this change - should have just waited until the pyramid was due for an update.

I find it easy to teach with; any visual guide of course will need additional info - USDA has good tip sheets. I'm going to use it w/ my grandchildren.

This is a refreshing change. Is there a low literacy version with pictures? What about adding how much pure, clean, water to drink everyday?
What about MyPlate illustrations for different types of diets based on culture, vegetarian, calories, pregancy, etc?

Where are the healthy fats: oils, nuts.etc.?
Why not add a glass of water?

Oil?
Why were "oils" (so-called "healthy fats") ignored?
