E.coli outbreak seems confined to retail sector

07-Mar-2011

Food manufacturers and ingredients companies appear to be unaffected by the latest outbreak of E.coli linked to eating unshelled hazelnuts, also known as filberts.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working with public health officials in California, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections.

The nuts were distributed by DeFranco & Sons in Los Angeles, California. The company is voluntarily recalling bulk and consumer-packaged in-shell hazelnuts and mixed-nut products containing hazelnuts.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed that the nuts have been distributed to retail outlets in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario and may have been sold countrywide.

Symptoms of E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps and diarrhea.
