Gulf oil spill shuts leading oyster processor

The leading oyster processor in the US Gulf shut down its operations at the weekend because it could no longer guarantee deliveries as the fallout from the BP oil spill continued, said its chief.

Ameripure president John Tesvich said the firm had suspended operations and laid off 40 workers at its Louisinana plant as it said the two-month disaster meant supplies to its foreign and domestics clients were not assured. The firm said it was running at a loss despite a 50 per cent increase in oyster prices.

The company said the diversion of oyster boats to help the clean up effort and that increasing number of its independent suppliers had said they may stop dredging for the shellfish were to blame for the shutdown.
