Stevia-sweetened soft drink launched in New Zealand

06-Nov-2009

New Zealand beverage company Frucor has launched Revive Supplement Water, sweetened with PureCircle’s Reb A, the high intensity sweetener derived from the leaves of the stevia plant.

PureCircle’s vice president of sales for the Asia Pacific region Chris Hession said: “We are delighted to be associated with Frucor in this important launch for the category which further underlines the growing support for stevia by major food and beverage manufacturers in Asia Pacific.”

NZ Food Safety Authority’s John Van den Beuken told FoodNavigator-USA.com that steviol glycosides were approved for use as high intensity sweeteners in 2008, in line with JECFA (Joint WHO/FAO Expert Committee on Food Additives) recommendations.

“No further approval is required for specific brands of products,” he said.
