A Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-imposed block on carbendazim-tainted orange juice and concentrate has seen a further three shipments denied entry into the US – taking the total to 30.
To-date, FDA officials have collected samples from 144 shipments of orange juice or orange juice concentrate, of which 30 have tested positive and 103 negative for carbendazim.
Of the 30 carbendazim-positive shipment, 14 were from Brazil, 12 were from Canada, two from Costa Rica and one each from Poland and the Dominican Republic.
All shipments that tested positive for the substance have been detained or refused entry to the US.
Eleven shipments are currently awaiting results.
The FDA measures were imposed following concerns from Minute Maid manufacturer Coca-Cola after it found levels of the substance in its own marketed orange juice, its competitors and not yet marketed samples.
Carbendazim, which is not approved for use in the production of oranges in the US, is commonly used in countries such as Brazil in an effort to combat black mould.
