Joint venture DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products Company has teamed up with flavors giant Symrise to launch a new all-natural bio-based solvent and humectant as a carrier for compounded flavors.

The JV’s first ingredient for the US food market, Zemea USP Propanediol is being marketed as a sustainable replacement for petroleum-based propylene glycol or glycerin in multiple food and beverage applications.

Made from glucose (from corn) via a fermentation process, Zemea USP Propanediol boasts unique humectancy, preservative effects, solubility and taste properties, claim the firms.

Made in Loudon, Tenn, Zemea USP is certified Kosher and Halal certified and has received a letter of no-objection from the FDA to its GRAS (generally recognized as safe) determination. It is also certified GRAS by the Flavor & Extracts Manufacturers Association (FEMA).

“As a leader in this market, Symrise has the technical capabilities and market reach to make Zemea USP the carrier of choice for flavor compounds”, said Steve Hurff, vice president of marketing and sales, DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products.

“Symrise is an excellent partner to develop and market innovative flavor formulations using our natural flavor carrier.”

DuPont Tate and Lyle Bio Products is a joint venture between DuPont and Tate & Lyle.
