From coconut water, to Greek yogurt, gluten-free, veggie proteins, dairy-alternatives and whole grains; what were the biggest trends of 2012, and what’s on the menu for 2013?
One trend that seems set to continue in 2013, despite the narrow defeat of Californian GMO labeling initiative Prop 37 last month, is the growth of products labeled non-GMO (genetically modified organism), whether to appeal to consumers worried about biotech crops, or as a safeguard against class action lawsuits arguing that products labeled 'natural' should not contain GMOs.
According to SPINS, sales of non-GMO Project verified products surged 85% to $2.4bn in the 52 weeks to October 29, 2012, with that growth set to continue into 2013.
