FoodProductionDaily.com caught up with Tom Egan, of PMMI, at the recent Interpack trade show to discuss key trends in the North American sector.

The industry vice president for the US-based trade body said the sector was bouncing back from the 2008 recession and forecast healthy growth both this year and next on the roll out of pent up demand and improved consumer sentiment.

Customer preferences on retail-ready and single serve packs continued to be strong drivers, he said.

While acknowledging the growth of flexibles, Egan strongly cautioned against any attempts to write off glass and metal packaging.

In the aftermath of the economic downturn, the industry specialist explained why leaner brand owners were demanding a more “total systems” approach from PMMI members.

He also declared the ongoing implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act would present opportunities for the industry as the need for automated data recording around traceability became increasingly key.
