Undeclared ingredients the major cause of recalls

A roundup of recalled products in June shows the importance of careful labeling, with the majority taken off the shelves because of various undeclared ingredients.
- Setton International Foods for example is recalling Mariani Brand fancy golden raisins because the product may contain undeclared sulfites.
People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.
The recalled Mariani Brand fancy golden raisins are packed in 30-pound cardboard boxes, coded 5103D. The product was sold in the Long Island New York Metropolitan area.
- New York State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers has announced that Oriental House is also recalling its Dried Vegetable product due to the presence of undeclared sulfites.
The recalled Dried Vegetable, a product of China, is packaged in a 4 ounce plastic bag. It was sold in the Syracuse area.
- Barricini Candy is recalling 690 cases of Catherine's Finest Pecan Caramel Clusters and 85 cases of Shwom's Caramel Pecan Clusters because they may contain undeclared soy nuts.
The recall was initiated when a discovery was made during a review of packaging, that product containing soy nuts was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of soy nuts.
Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was a result of improper labeling on packaging supplied by the previous ownership of the newly acquired company.
- Four states have been added to the voluntary recall of half-gallon packages of Kemps Bakery Classics French Silk Pie Ice Cream.
One of the ingredients in the ice cream contains wheat and is not declared on the ingredient label. The recalled ice cream was distributed to retail supermarkets in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas, Illinois and Michigan.
- Similarly, Midwest Ice Cream is voluntarily recalling half-gallon rectangle cartons of its Fieldcrest chocolate ice cream because it may contain an undeclared peanut allergen.
Approximately 5,500 cartons of the recalled ice cream were processed at the Midwest Ice Cream Company plant in Belvidere, Illinois and distributed to retailers in portions of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin.
- Golden Taste is recalling its Golden Taste Tuna Deluxe in 7.5 ounce and 3.5 ounce clear plastic containers because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recalled Golden Taste Tuna Deluxe was distributed to retail stores throughout New York State. Production of the product has been suspended while the Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors continues its investigation.
- And finally, Frito-Lay has announced the voluntary recall of 265 cases of 1 1/8 ounce Baked! Lay's Original flavor potato crisps distributed in Midwestern and Northeastern states.
There is a possibility that the product may contain dairy-based seasoning not declared on the label. The company is now retrieving the product from its distribution system and partner distributors.
