Whey protein isolate delivers satiety

Recent research suggests that whey protein can play an important role in weight control. Of all the macronutrients, protein appears to have a stronger appetite-suppressing effect. When consuming protein we feel fuller than when consuming the same number of calories in carbohydrate, partly because carbohydrates digest quickly. Whey protein offers additional benefits. Peptides in whey, called lactokinins, inhibit the compound angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Left unhindered, ACE encourages fat cell growth. Another whey protein component, glycomacropeptide (GMP), may suppress appetite by stimulating the intestinal hormone cholecystokinin (CCK). The combined effect of these components in whey protein appears to have a much stronger slimming effect than either alone. Whey protein, through its interaction with gastrointestinal hormones, also appears to increase feeling of the satiety more than other proteins.

 

Whey protein isolate, a concentrated source of protein, is ideally suited to satisfying foods and beverages. However, the GMP levels in whey protein isolate are influenced by how the WPI is manufactured. Most WPIs are manufactured by ion exchange (IX) or microfiltration (MF).
