Consumers are concerned about the safety of synthetic food colorants and are encouraging food manufacturers to replace them with natural coloring ingredients.
Recently, the European Union (EU) required warning labels on foods and beverages containing any of the “Southampton Six” synthetic food colors, which include colorants used to obtain red hues.
Also, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration rule effective Jan. 5, 2011, requires all foods containing cochineal to declare the ingredient on the consumer food label. Consumers are opting for natural-derived alternatives.
Kalsec® is a key partner in helping food and beverage companies find solutions for naturally derived red colorants to replace Allura Red (Red 40), Ponceau 4R and Carmine in certain applications.
