Colostrum is the first milk produced by mammals in the late stages of pregnancy and the few days after giving birth. It is high in carbohydrates, protein and antibodies, and low in fat. Yesterday, biopharmaceutical company Anadis announced its new collaboration with GSN, a division of VitaQuest International based in New Jersey that works with dietary supplements. The two companies intend to introduce a range of products based on Anadis' proprietary milk-derived bioactives and immunoglobulins (antibodies). "The combination of GSN's skills with our decade of R&D in the field of dairy-derived colostrum bioactives will now allow Anadis to rapidly penetrate the US vitamins and dietary supplements market," said Oren Fuerst, vice president for business development at Anadis in New York. Planned launches The partnership is looking to release products that relieve symptoms associated with gastro intestinal problems, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease - maladies, Anadis said, that are suffered by 20 percent of the general population. Other areas they hope to enter with its colostrum-based products include the cold and flu market. Fuerst said: In addition, there is a wealth of other opportunities such as in the Athletes and body building market. Overall, we are looking to address some of the largest segments." Although the market for products based on colostrum is relatively small according to Anadis, it said its methodology provides a high potency for a broad range of problems. The company claimed that with its proprietary, all-natural colostrum platform, the company can obtain much higher levels of immunoglobulin than alternatives in the market. Fuerst explained to NutraIngredients-USA.com: "This relates to a unique and patented technology for harvesting the colostrum and also to unique vaccines we immunize the cows with in their last trimester of pregnancy, to ensure high level of immunoglobulin and other bioactives in the colostrum that are addressing the target of interest." They focus on every step, from injection of the cows through to harvesting the colostrum and utilizing it in products. GSN GSN is a large custom contract manufacturer of nutritional supplements in the US, producing more than $1bn worth of finished retail products per year to more than 35 countries worldwide. The two companies would not disclose the terms of their agreement or for how long it would last. Jon Weisgal, vice president of marketing at VitaQuest, said: "We are thrilled to have Anadis with its proprietary Colostrum derived bioactives working with us. We see great potential in introducing Anadis to our more than 300 clients." The value of the US vitamins and dietary supplements market exceeds $15bn, and experiences a growth rate in excess of 5 percent according to 2007 Euromonitor figures.
