US diabetes rate could double, claim researchers

- Last updated on GMT

The number of cases of diabetes in the States will “at least double” over the next 25 years, according to a new report published in the December issue of Diabetes Care.

Reasons for this include soaring rates of obesity and an aging population, both of which are risk factors for type-2 diabetes, wrote the researchers, from the University of Chicago. At the moment, they said there are 19.5m diagnosed cases of diabetes in the US, with another 4.25m undiagnosed cases.

“We project that over the next 25 years, the number of

Americans with diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes will increase from 23.7 million to 44.1 million,” they wrote.
