GM alfalfa edges closer to approval

- Last updated on GMT

Comments on the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for genetically modified (GM) alfalfa, completed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), have now closed, moving the crop closer to approval.

GM alfalfa was originally approved in 2005, but was taken off the market after a coalition of groups took the USDA to court, saying that an EIS needed to be prepared. The groups won a temporary ban on GM alfalfa seeds, pending the preparation of an EIS by the USDA.

The USDA has found no safety concerns with Monsanto’s alfalfa, and an appeal against the temporary ban is due to take place later this year.
