Companies that supplied crushed red and black pepper to Daniele International, the salami producer at the heart of a salmonella contamination probe, have issued new recalls, the FDA has reported.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an update on its investigation into the possibility of salmonella in ground black and red pepper, in which it specified that spice products are being recalled by the New Jersey-based Mincing Overseas Spice Company and by Brooklyn-based Wholesome Spice Company. Both supply pepper to Daniele International.

“Based on recent test results, Mincing Overseas Spice Company and Wholesome Spice Company are conducting new recalls,” the FDA said.

The agency has warned that recalled products may have been bought by food manufacturers and incorporated in their own products.

The spices being recalled by Mincing Overseas Spice Company are: black pepper, lot 3258 in 50-pound, 25-pound, and 20-pound cartons with Mincing Overseas Spice Company’s name on the outside; and black pepper, lot 3309 in 50-pound, 25-pound, and 20-pound cartons with Mincing Overseas Spice Company’s name on the outside.

The spices being recalled by Wholesome Spice Company are: ground red pepper sold to Daniele International, whole black pepper sold to Daniele International, and crushed red pepper sold from April 6, 2009, to Jan. 20, 2010 in 25-pound boxes, previously recalled on February 25.

The outbreak has been linked to 249 illnesses across 44 states and the District of Columbia. No deaths associated with the outbreak have been reported.
