Sara Lee makes sustainable coffee pledge

Sara Lee has said it intends to source 20 percent of its coffee from sustainable sources by 2015, as part of a five-year sustainable commodities program.

CEO of Sara Lee’s international beverage and bakery businesses Frank van Oers said: “Sara Lee’s long-term goal is to use only certified coffee and tea in all products worldwide, and this new aggressive five-year plan is a very important step in accelerating our progress. By providing coffee growers visibility five years out and publicly committing to buy very large quantities of certified coffee we can contribute to improve sustainability in the mainstream coffee market worldwide.”

The company, which ranks third worldwide for coffee volume behind Nestlé and Kraft, said it has bought 110m kilograms of UTZ-certified coffee over the past five years and aims to more than triple that amount to 350m kilograms in the next five years.
