American consumers plan to use a toolbox of strategies to cope with higher food prices, according to a new survey conducted by Harris Interactive, commissioned by

The survey, conducted by phone in March 2011, involved 1,010 adults across the United States, whose responses were weighted to represent the demographics of the US population as a whole.

It found that 95 percent of respondents intend to take some sort of action to make savings at the grocery store, including using coupons (72 percent), comparing the unit price of package sizes (71 percent), stocking up when items are on sale (64 percent) and buying in bulk (57 percent).

CEO of Steven Boal said: “Food prices are expected to continue to rise this year to potentially all-time highs. Couple that with flat incomes, and increases in pricing of basic items such as food is like taking a pay cut. Fortunately, consumers are savvier than ever when it comes to stretching budgets, and it’s great to see that so many of them will take matters into their own hands when it comes to mitigating the effects of higher food costs.”
