The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed an interactive web-based tool to estimate the cost of illness caused by specific foodborne pathogens.

Calculator users can modify the annual number of illnesses caused by specific foodborne pathogens, the value or amount of time lost from work, the distribution of cases by severity, and the costs of premature death or disability. Users can also update the cost estimate for inflation for any year from 1997 to 2010, the USDA said. Data for salmonella and shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157 (STEC O157) are currently online.

The calculator can be accessed here.
