South American broiler meat production up 81% in 10 years

South America’s total broiler meat production has increased by 81% between 2001 and 2011, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced.

Brazil and Argentina showed the strongest growth over the same period, with 97% and 95% respectively, although Argentina still only represents 10% of overal South American production in 2011. Brazil’s share, however, has gone from 70% to 77% in the past ten years, strengthening the country’s place as poultry giant.

Broiler meat exports from South America rose by 187% since 2001, with a slight decline in Brazil’s share from 97% to 91% in 2011. Argentina’s share increased from 1% to 6% in the same time.

Broiler consumption showed a 67% increase for the same time frame, with Brazil and Argentina again standing out with a growth of 81% and 71% respectively.

The USDA forecasts further growth in the South American poultry sector, with overall production going from approximately 15.8 million tonnes in 2010 to around 20.2 million tonnes in 2021.
