Green and mean
In the first phase, the algae is green. The paddle wheels stir the mixture in the 10-inch-deep ponds of potable drinking water from Hawaiin aquifiers so all the algae is exposed to sunlight (light only penetrates about an inch so constant motion is important).
Carbon dioxide is also fed into the pools to accelerate the algae’s growth.
Fluid levels are monitored constantly and samples taken daily and tested in the on-site laboratory for contaminants and nutrient levels.
