Brazil notches up record beef exports
Brazil exported a record amount of beef in 2012, according to figures released by the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporters (Abiec).
The figures reveal that $5.53bn of beef was exported from Brazil between January to the second week of December, with total exports for 2012 expected to reach $5.8bn. Abiec said the results could have been even higher were it not for the global recession, which put downward pressure on average beef prices.
Volumes of beef exports were also up significantly, reversing a downward trend seen over the last three years. Export volumes increased 12.25% year-on-year in the January-November 2012 period.
Abiec said it expected Brazil would regain the position of the world’s largest beef exporter from the US, which exported more beef than Brazil last year.
