ETHAN BROWN & BRENT TAYLOR, co-founders, Beyond Meat: ‘What can you do about climate change? Change your diet…’
Much like plant egg entrepreneur Josh Tetrick, the co-founders of LA-based Beyond Meat (which makes ‘near-perfect’ replicas of meat from plants at its factory in Colombia, Missouri) are convinced that changing the way we eat can change the world.
And if you hand people solutions on a plate (literally) such that no sacrifice is involved (Beyond Meat really is just as good as the real thing), why wouldn’t they jump at the opportunity, says CEO and co-founder Ethan Brown (pictured left), who has convinced Whole Foods, Sprouts, Bristol Farms, Publix, HEB, Safeway and Target - to give him a chance to prove it.
People are always saying, ‘What can I do about climate change?’ but feel overwhelmed by how little difference they can make in the scheme of things, says Brown. You can buy a hybrid car, he says, or you can do something much simpler, and probably far more impactful, like changing your diet.
And he’s thinking big. After all, why settle for a slice of the $600m US meat-alternatives market when you can go after a chunk of the $180bn meat market?
“The response so far has been really fantastic,” adds VP corporate development Brent Taylor (pictured right).
“We’ve gone from zero stores to several thousand in less than a year. But we’re also talking to lots of people on the foodservice and industrial side. In the longer-term, absolutely I can see our products at chains like Taco Bell, McDonald’s and Burger King.”
