Boom Chicka pop!
While some market watchers claim that the ready-to-eat popcorn bubble is about to burst, one brand that has proved it has staying power is Angie's Boom chicka pop, created by Angie and Dan Bastian, co-founders of Minnesota-based Angie's Artisan Treats.
The firm, which first started selling kettle corn in 2001 and now sells nationwide in natural food, grocery, club and mass retail outlets, is still notching up mouthwatering growth, with sales up 96% in 2013 and sales on target to break through the $80m barrier this year, says Angie Bastian.
"People ask if there will be a shakeout because so many new brands are coming in, but we've seen a continual shakeout in the popcorn category. In the years since we started we've seen big brands come and go, but we've kept our nose to the grindstone."
So what's the secret to her success?
"You've got diet popcorn and gourmet popcorn, but there's also room for innovation in the middle," she says.
"We've kept things fun and playful. A lot of snacking brands are male oriented or they are about dieting for women. We are transparent about what's in our products and some of them are very low in calories, but I wanted to create something feminine that was not just about managing your weight."
