82% of Americans skip meals (mainly lunch or breakfast)
Next we headed to the expo floor to hear a session on snacking trends from SoyJoy, which said 82% of Americans say they regularly skip meals and replace them with snacks. Here are some highlights:
When snacking, 1,000 US consumers polled by SoyJoy in July claimed that they were looking for:
- Portability & convenience (73%)
- Calories (72%),
- A good source of protein (69%)
- Recognizable ingredients (65%)
- A good source of fiber (65%).
They also value the following attributes: A balance of nutrients (63%), all-natural ingredients (61%), non-GMO (56%), low-GI (37%), and gluten-free (28%), although an analysis of what people actually snack on suggests that they don't always practice what they preach.
