Bird flu found in US commercial poultry flock

The discovery, in Stanislaus County, marks the first time the strain has been found in commercial poultry during the recent spate of outbreaks in the Pacific Flyway – a major north-south flyway for migratory birds in America, extending from Alaska to Patagonia.
The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the presence of the strain on Saturday (24 January) after samples from the flock were tested at the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS), following increased mortality at the site.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), has quarantined the facility, with the remaining birds on the property to be culled to prevent further spread of the disease.
