Renewable energy drives national recognition
MOM’s became fully wind-powered in 2005 as a way to show large corporations that it is possible to be fully powered by renewable energy and still stay in business, Egland-Smith said.
Yes, buying renewable energy credits is more expensive than conventional electricity, but the decision to be wind-powered has given MOM’s national attention because it is one of the top 30 retailers recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for its sustainability.
Egland-Smith added the chain’s 2014 wind-power credits were equivalent to what is produced by two 1.8 mega-watt turbines, and supporting them is a good way to “get these turbines in the ground.”
