According to respondents in the 2015 IFIC food & health survey, a mere 16% said counting calories worked, while just 6% said participating in a weight loss program or using a digital tracker worked. More successful (self-reported) approaches included 'changing the types of foods eaten,' 'making sure I get enough physical activity', 'eating smaller meals or snacks' and 'controlling high calorie foods or beverages'.
