Mrs. Renfro’s moves pumpkin spice from sweet to savory
Of the plethora of pumpkin spiced products that flood the market every fall in the US, the vast majority are sweet. But condiment company Renfro Foods brings the classic spice blend to the savory side with the launch of its Mrs. Renfro’s Pumpkin Salsa. The salsa uses pumpkin puree as a base ingredient and also blends in cinnamon and pumpkin pie spices to help the ingredient pop against other dominating flavors, including onion, garlic and jalapeños, said Doug Renfro, president of Renfro Foods. The result is a new flavor experience that also feels familiar because it reminds consumers of the holidays and autumn, which “makes them feel good,” Renfro added. He also noted that the pumpkin puree makes the salsa great for dipping chips, but also good as a marinade or base for slow cooking chicken.
