Farmed fish: 'The lowest-impact form of animal protein on the planet'?
Sustainable seafood also generated a bit of a buzz at the show, with Love the Wild and Salty Girl Seafood both attempting to make fish more accessible to consumers who are unsure how to prepare it, but know it's good for them.
Boulder, CO-based Love the Wild - which combines farmed fish "the lowest-impact form of animal protein on the planet" with a ready-made sauce, and recently attracted funding from Leonardo DiCaprio - took first place in the annual Expo West pitch slam. The aim, said co-founder Jacqueline Claudia, who says the products are now in around 500 stores, is to make fish less "intimidating."
At Santa Barbara-based Salty Girl Seafood, which sources wild-caught seafood from sustainably harvested fisheries, the latest innovation is veggie-packed salmon bites, which are a great alternative to breaded fish sticks for kids, said CEO Vanessa Ting. The bites contain salmon, sweet potato puree, rolled oats, broccoli, egg, expeller pressed canola oil and salt.
