Canadian meat recall triggered over E.coli fears

A recall operation for a large quantity of minced meat products is under way in Canada's most populous province, Ontario, due to fears of E.coli contamination.

In total, 71 recalls for different beef, pork, chicken and veal products sold across more than a dozen Ontario-based convenience stores has been issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

An exact volume of meat implicated in the recall is currently unknown. The CFIA has claimed it was triggered by a recall of fresh veal by Newmarket Meat Packers Limited, a veal and lamb processor, although this does not explain why pork and chicken products are being recalled too.

Products should be thrown away

However, the government agency said it was conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to further recalls.

Consumers are being advised not to consume the products. Instead, people have been advised to either throw away or return the products to the point of purchase. You can see a full list of the recalled products here.

The various products have been recalled due to concerns they may be contaminated with E.coli O157:H7. People eating such tainted food could develop symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
CFIA and Newmarket Meat Packers Limited could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.
