Dannon has pledged to boost the nutrition profile of its products after striking a deal with non-profit The Partnership for a Healthier America.
While most yogurts already provide three of the four nutrients most lacking in American diets (calcium, potassium and Vitamin D), Dannon has pledged to make further improvements.
By 2016, it will:
- Improve the nutrient density by 10% of the Dannon product portfolio overall by increasing nutrients to encourage, such as Vitamin D, and decreasing total sugar and fat.
- Reduce total sugar to 23g or less per 6 ounce serving in 100% of products for children and 70% of its products overall.
- Make 75% of products low-fat or fat-free.
- Invest $3m in nutrition education and research.
Asked about where Dannon is currently on the sugar level commitment, Michael Neuwirth, senior director of public relations at Dannon, told FoodNavigator-USA: "Approximately 62% of all Dannon products have 23g or less as measured during the baseline period. This will go to 70% per the commitment."
A nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, The Partnership for a Healthier America brings together public, private and nonprofit leaders to broker commitments and develop strategies to end childhood obesity. It also ensures commitments are kept by working with third parties to monitor and publicly report on the progress partners are making.
