Following a series of major lawsuits against food companies in the US, the law firm of Bowman and Brooke has established a firm-wide Food Safety Practice team.

However, according to Bowman and Brooke, defending food manufacturers and the hospitality industry is not new to the nationally recognised group of attorneys. The firm has successfully defended companies in food contamination issues, commercial and franchise disputes, and employment law matters for several years, in a sector where major food safety scares are coming to light on a regular basis.

Led by Richmond-based co-managing partner Christopher Spencer and Minneapolis-based partner Kim Schmid, the group plans to continue expanding its trial practice by applying the same expertise learned from other product liability matters, such as unmatched trial experience, and detailed knowledge of the manufacturing process and health sciences, directly to the food industry.

"We know how the body works, and we know how to translate that complex science into simple and understandable language to a jury," says Spencer. "We've handled food industry cases before, we felt the timing was right in formalising our team."

Bowman and Brooke represents clients throughout the US, defending some of the highest profile cases for large household-name companies, in areas such as product liability, business litigation, construction defect, drug and medical device, toxic exposure, intellectual property and employment law.
